Surprisingly, you were born with the ability to recognize health, vitality, and youth. How else can you explain how a small child can look at a sick or elderly dog and know something is “different” about the animal? Why does that same child look at a wilting plant and know something is “wrong” with it? Why is it that you can see someone’s smile and immediately judge if it is attractive or not? These observations are tied to our innate ability to distinguish health from sickness and youth from age.
We are naturally drawn to the youthful and healthy. Evolutionary imperatives dictate that a species continues successfully when the healthiest and strongest individuals thrive. Humans are genetically programmed to be attracted to signals indicating that someone is a good candidate for mating.
Researchers have found that humans gauge the attractiveness of a face by assessing three key features: the eyes, the complexion, and the smile. Bright eyes, radiant skin, and a beautiful smile are indicators of youth, health, and vitality.
Recognizing Health in Your Smile
An unexaggerated natural ability to recognize health is crucial for judging our own health, especially regarding our teeth. Unlike many parts of the body hidden from view, our mouths are visible. A simple mirror can show us our teeth and gums, providing a quick, easy, and surprisingly accurate health assessment.
Take a careful look at your mouth and ask yourself: “Do I like my smile?” This first impression is vital. The immediate judgment formed based on the overall look of your teeth can help determine if corrective measures are needed. This initial assessment, though quick, taps into our innate sense of health and vitality.
The Design of Your Mouth
Your mouth, like every part of your body, is a masterfully designed system composed of various components. Each part exemplifies “form following function.” For instance, the broad, flat chewing surface of back teeth is perfect for grinding foods, while the narrow, sharp edges of front teeth are ideal for cutting.
The components of your chewing system—teeth, gums, jaw joints (TMJ), and chewing muscles —work harmoniously to ensure efficient food processing. In a healthy state, this system functions seamlessly and looks aesthetically pleasing. Teeth that are unworn and undamaged, properly positioned, and surrounded by healthy gums are viewed as attractive.
Evaluating Your Smile
Once you recognize that your smile is “not pretty,” it becomes the responsibility of dental professionals to determine what is “unhealthy” and offer solutions to create a “healthy, pretty” smile. An unattractive smile could be due to inflamed gums, discolored or worn teeth, or swelling.
Regularly assessing your smile and understanding the harmony of your mouth’s components can provide significant insights into your oral health. If you find your smile lacking, a dental professional can guide you on the path to achieving a healthy, beautiful smile.
So, smile and take a quick glance in the mirror. “Do you like what you see?”
